More to come..... Kumbh MelaStory
of Kumbh Mela : The story of Kumbh Mela is related to pot of
Nectar described in ancient Vedic scriptures known as Puranas. Once gods
and demons decided to churn the milk ocean to produce nectar and shared
it equally. They all were agreed to share it and drunk it. Finally the
Mandara Mountain used as churning rod, Vasuki worked as rope for
churning. But the Mandara Mountain sunk, so the Vishnu incarnated as a
big tortoise and supported it. This process tooks thousand years to
churned the milk ocean. The churning of the milk ocean produced deadly
poison and it was drunk by Lord Shiva so we call him "Nil Kunth".
But
few drops of poison fell on the body of snakes, scorpions and other
deadly animals. After Shiva drank the poison, surabhi cow, Uccaihsrava
horse, white elephant named Airavata, Kaustubha-mani appeared. Finally
the nectar pot came out from the ocean. Gods and Demons started fighting
after seeing the nectar pot. Gods thought demons will be more powerful
than us and never die if they drunk nectar. During the fight, the drops
of nectar fells in Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik. Again Vishnu
incarnated himself as a beautiful woman to attract the demons. The
demons really forgetted everything after seeing her. In the meantime
gods drunk the nectar pot and they became the powerful. It takes place only when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries. The sanskrit meaning of Kumbh is "pot or pitcher".
