Prathamastami : This festival is celebrated in Orissa and one
of the most popular festival of Orissa. The eldest child in the family
honoured in this festival and is celebrated on the 8th day in the month
of Margasira. A reason behind it that why we consider the elder for this
festival. According to the science first born person are mostly healthy,
obedient and respective. So honoured given to the eldest child after the
death of the parents. In this, the mother or the elder lady praying the
godess Sasthi for the good health and long life of the eldest child. In this festival, the new clothes given to the eldest child and sit him/her on the Pidha(wooden made). Then water given on the hand with full of paddy and branch of mango and leaves of the coconut placed on it. Raksha Bandhan : Also known as Rakhi one of the most popular
festivals of India. It is the festival of symbol of love of brothers and
sisters. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shravan
according to the Hindu calender. The sisters tie the Rakhi string on
their brothers right wrist and pray to god for their happiness and long
life. The festival of love of brothers and siters is also mentioned in Mahabharata Epic. Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas tied rakhi on the wrist of Lord Krishna as he protected her from the Kauravas. Mahashivratri : This festival is celebrated in the month of
Magh on the 14th day. The god of this festival is Lord Shiva(creator and
destroyer of the world). There are lots of stories associated with
Mahashivratri. Some says when Samundar Manthan started to get nectar, a pot of poison came out from the ocean. It was very dangerous and Gods and Denom thought that it would destroy the whole world. So they requested to Lord Shiva for the protection of the world from the poison. Lord Shiva drank the dangerous poison and so he has also a name "Nilkantha". On Mahashivaratri, devotee worship the Linga with bael leaves, vermilion paste, incense and water.
